Some time ago now, my own mentor encouraged me to look for opportunities to pass on any learning and experience that I have gained from intentionally mentoring guys up and down the country, over the last 6 years.

I have been able to do a significant amount of this through the mentoring training days that I have been involved with for the last 18 months, in partnership with the Sophia Network and CPAS, but last week was an incredibly powerful and strategic time when, together with my friend and colleague, Sharon Prior, I led the first ever Christian Mentoring and Coaching course, at Cliff College, Derbyshire...

What IS Discipleship?

What have we come to accept as “discipleship”? A friend of mine recently

The Heart of the Mentor (excerpt from the book!)

"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." Proverbs 4:23

Chapter 1 – Heart Check
In our culture, the word, 'heart' has become a soft word. It refers to the sentimental life. Expressions such as 'heartbroken' and 'heartfelt' show that we often think of the heart as the warm place where the emotions are located, in contrast to the cool intellect where our thoughts are. The word 'heart', however, in the Jewish Christian tradition refers to the source of all physical, emotional, intellectual, volitional and moral energies! From the heart come impulses as well as conscious feelings, moods and wishes. The heart is also the centre of perception and understanding, and the seat of the will, thus the heart is the central and unifying organ of our personal life. Our heart determines our personality and is, therefore, not only the place where God lives, but also the place where Satan directs his fiercest attacks.

Place

I have just had a meeting in a coffee shop. I have lots of meetings in coffee shops. I like the atmoshere here, it is informal and friendly. My task, however, is to create a little 'atmosphere'/'environment'/'place', call it what you will, that is safe and where an intentional and focused conversation can take place. This takes practice and I have made a few mistakes in the past - noisy espresso machines and such like are not ideal to have around. I also like to make sure there is plenty of light and that the person I am talking to is not going to be distracted by other customers or posters on walls etc. I try and arrive early and case the joint before my mentee arrives, and I have been known to change venues at the last minute if where I have chosen is not going to be conducive to the kind of chat I feel we need to have - simple but fundamental aspects of intentional mentoring.

Hearing From God

Subject: I CAN’T TALK TO YOU…UNLESS!
Sadly, great numbers of Christians do not know God’s voice. Some can go for months, even years, without ever receiving an intimate word from the Lord in their inner man. Oh, God did speak to them at one time. But over the years, they’ve learned to silence his voice in their hearts. Others have been turned off by so much foolishness among those who believe that every word that pops into their minds is divine. Such people boast, “God told me”—yet the “word” they hear is only their covetous flesh taking voice!

What are men with balls like?

1. They have a strong understanding of the Christian Gospel and defend it fiercely.

2. They hunger for the Word of God to be taught, understood and applied in their own lives, their families and others.

3. They are passionate in lifestyle and worship, throwing themselves wholeheartedly into serving Jesus in whatever ways they can.

4. They are ruthlessly faithful to their wives and families, their close friends and community.
